At any given opportunity, politicians always try to dig deep about their opponents educational history, especially on the NYSC program.
Just recently, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, openly revealed, that the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the person of Joy Nunieh, did not participate in the one-year National Youth Service Corp.
The Minister made this known, during questioning by the lawmakers at the House of Representatives Committee investigative hearing on fund mismanagement in the NDDC.
This is a shocking revelation indeed and it might also seem like she doesn't have exemption certificate too.
Remember, the case of Former Finance Minister and Former Chairman of the Board of African Export–Import Bank, of Nigeria, Kemi Adeosun, who was publicly dragged because she did not partake in the NYSC Scheme as an under 30 when she graduated, instead she took Exemption Certificate.
Judging from these circumstances, one will assume that NYSC Certificate has taken the place of Bachelor's Degree, National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in the country.
Moreso, more values is being given to the NYSC scheme than Nigeria higher institution. It's as if, without NYSC certificate, no one is longer qualified for public offices or appointment.
In my opinion much preference is being given to NYSC Certification than University or Higher institution degree in the country, and this hold no major weight or make sense.
The reason for my opinion is that, without NYSC one can still function effectively and make positive outcomes. Though, I'm not saying NYSC certificate isn't a necessity, but it shouldn't take the place of other certifications.
