The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today Sunday July 19th, through its President Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said the lecturers under the umbrella of the union will not resume back to the classrooms, even if the Federal government orders the reopening of the schools. While speaking with “Premium times dailies” on telephone, said the union never said the schools should be reopened by 2021, as being rumored in various quarters in Nigeria
He said the position of ASUU on the reopening of schools, is that the government should not reopen the school yet if all the necessary measures and steps, to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic are not put in place, because the health of the lecturers and students should be the paramount to everyone.
While speaking, Prof. Ogunyemi said the lecturers will not return back to class anytime soon if all the lingering issue between them and the government are not resolved, we embarked on strike even before the outbreak of the pandemic, so for that we have issues placed on the table of the federal government to address, some of the issues is the registration of all the academic staff on the IPPIS payment platform which we are all against it, and also revitalization of the university system.
If the school is well equipped then there is no point to stop academic activities, because if there is enough classrooms then the social distancing rule would be easily observed. We hereby urge then government to prioritize the educational system the way they are handling health sector.
On a final note, our staff will not return back to the classrooms unless the government yield to our demands.
”What do you make of ASUU’s position on these resumption issue?
Should the government prioritize education sector than any other sector in Nigeria?
