It is no longer news that all the schools in the country were forced into lockdown by the federal government of Nigeria due to the coronavirus pandemic which had been affecting the country and the world at large.
The federal government had to take the bold step so as to protect human lives and prevent the spread of the pandemic in the country.
The decision to shut down schools to protect human lives and prevent the spread of the pandemic, however, also has its own demerits in that it is having negative effects on students especially those in senior secondary schools and higher institutions of learning.
In my opinion, therefore, the federal government should put the following reasons into consideration, and then reopen schools for the aforementioned students with immediate effect.
The following are reasons why all senior secondary schools, colleges of education, monotechnics, polytechnics, and universities in the country should be reopened with immediate effect.
1. Students in senior secondary schools, colleges of education, monotechnics, polytechnics, and universities are mature and old enough to adhere to the established COVID-19 preventive measures of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
2. This category of students are not getting any younger. Schools should be reopened for them to continue their studies in order to graduate as early as possible. Moreover, this category of students might have to consider reducing their ages if the ban on schools is not lifted as soon as possible.
3. Although many students have seized the lockdown opportunity to enrol in some training and development programmes, there are many others who are idle and roaming around due to the fact that they do not have the resources to act like their mates. What I am trying to say in essence is that the federal government should act fast and reopen schools in order to prevent these idle students from engaging in illegal activities such as cybercrimes, thuggery, etc.
