Top 10 Most Competitive Universities in Nigeria 2021

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the body responsible for admission placement in Nigeria, has revealed the list of the top 10 most competitive universities in Nigeria for 2020/2021.

This was contained in a document made available to Newsmen following the Policy meeting that was held on 31st of August, 2021.

According to statistics, the University of Ilorin remains the most preferred institution for many students as it has been for over five years in a row.

However, there was a drastic reduction in the number of candidates that applied to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as it made the 6th most applied university in 2021. According to a report by, ABU Zaria had previously topped the list alongside UNILORIN for over 4 years.

Below is the list of the top 10 most applied Universities in Nigeria and the number of applicants for the year 2021.

  1. University of Ilorin - 78,466
  2. University of Lagos - 59,190
  3. University of Benin - 49,763
  4. University of Nigeria, Nsukka - 47,239
  5. Federal University, Oye-Ekiti - 45,920
  6. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - 44,509
  7. Bayero University, Kano - 44,352
  8. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka - 43,542
  9. Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun - 42,614
  10. University of Jos - 38,309

Furthermore, the 2021 UTME cumulative performance statistics revealed that out of the total 1,312,992 applicants who wrote the examination, 168,613 scored 200 and above, 236,936 scored 190 above, 327,624 scored 180, 445,597 scored 170 above, 595,015 scored 160 above, 772,463 scored 150 above, 964,098 scored 140 above and 1,134,854 scored 130 and above. It added that 66,811 scored below 120 and 1,245,449 scored 120 and above.

Meanwhile, JAMB announced the cancellation of general cut off marks for universities during the presentation at the Policy meeting. Henceforth, each University can at its own discretion, decide the cut-off mark and recommend eligible students to JAMB for admission.

Regardless of this, all students must be offered admission through JAMB CAPS in order for their admission to be valid.
