The ultimatum given to the Federal Government by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to implement agreements reached expired midnight 31st August 2021 without any tangible action on the part of Federal Government towards acceding to any of their demands.
Sequel to this, congresses have been slated to hold across branches starting from today, 1st September 2021 to brief members on status of implementation of Memorandum of Action signed with the Federal Government.
Notice of Congress issued by a Federal University in the South South Region that was sighted reads "Dear Comrades, please be informed that there shall be a meeting of ASUU Congress on Wednesday 1st September, 2021. Time: 12 noon. Venue: LT".
Each branch is expected to assess its level of satisfaction with progress made so far. A branch where majority of members are dissatisfied could pass a resolution to activate the strike that was suspended on 24th December 2020.
Each branch resolution will be passed to their respective zones from where it is then forwarded to national for collation. Collated results are presented at National Executive Council (NEC) for ratification of congress resolution outcomes.
If the process activated already culminates to a strike action, it will be one strike too many in Nigeria's tertiary education institutions. Government should as a matter of urgency implement agreements reached with the union to prevent another shutdown of the nation's universities.
