The educational venture that has today bloomed into Adeleke University had its beginning in the Springtime Development Foundation (SDF) (RC No. 8109), a not- for-profit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in 1996 by Dr. Adedeji Adeleke. The SDF came with a vision to empower disadvantaged communities, people and individuals to improve themselves and their environments. Within ten years of its existence, the SDF had registered operational presence in every state in Nigeria assisting people at the grass root of the populace to attain higher quality of life.
By its charter, the SDF provides relief materials to the poor and needy as well as victims of natural and social disasters. However, SDF intervention goes beyond providing aids. It seeks permanent solutions to the problem of poverty, diseases, hunger, and ignorance, social and political disabilities. This is where its educational intervention through the establishment of Adeleke University finds relevance. The SDF has as its mission statement “to provide appropriate physical and social basic structure upon which the less-privileged in any target people/group can be encouraged to build sustainable decent quality life”.

The Centre For Ethics and Self-Value Orientation, a non-partisan and self-value promoting organisation on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 awarded Adeleke University its 2019 award as the MOST ETHICALLY RESPONSIBLE PRIVATE UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA. Adeleke University displaced other 12 highly rated private universities to emerge the first with an overall score of 82 percent. The organisation that is based in Lokoja, Kogi State has offices in all the six geopolitical zones with over five thousand professionals serving as volunteers.
According to the Executive Director of the organization, Prince Salih Musa Yakubu, the exercise that gave birth to the award commenced in July 2018 and ended on October 30, 2019. Adeleke University got a total of 82 percent on aggregate to displace it closest rival from the southwest, thus becoming the most ethically responsible private university in Nigeria in 2019. The criteria for assessment includes; ownership integrity, timely implementation of staff welfare packages, students’ supports programmes, inclusive university policies and programmes, public accessibility, staff and students’ discipline and town and gown relationships.
While congratulating the University during the presentation of the award at the President/Vice-Chancellor’s office, Mr. Yakubu explained that his organisation requested for nominations from different sectors through questionnaires and stakeholders’ interview. Their finding revealed that Adeleke University is one of the few private universities in Nigeria that have remained focused in promoting the vision of their Founding Fathers through the maintenance of strong ethical standards and self-value orientation. He further explained that Adeleke University’s promotion of Faith and Learning, zero tolerance to all forms of immoralities and massive support for indigent students distinguished the institution from the other 12 involved in the assessment. While concluding his remarks, Mr. Yakubu proposed a 2-day free train-the-trainers training on Ethical Conducts and Leadership for 100 staff as their contribution to the laudable vision and achievements of Adeleke University.
