Good and cheering news for candidates planning to sit for their West African School Certificate (WASSCE) examination as six South West states comprising Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti States have signified their intention and readiness to conduct the pending 2020 West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations in their respective regions.
Barring any last minute changes, all is now set for candidates in these states to finally sit for their long overdue West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE ).
This cheering news was facilitated by the Western Agenda For Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission in collaboration with the South West education commissioners, special advisers on education and the state Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).
Only recently , nineteen Northern State governments supported the Federal Government decision to suspend schools reopening for SS3 students and postponement of WAEC examination till nex year.
What this new development translates to is that candidates for these examinations should start dusting their books and prepare hard for the exam as August 3rd date has been chosen as resumption date for SS3 Students, while the examination proper is proposed to start from August 24th, 2020.
To make the examination safety-compliant, the following measures are to be implemented:
# All schools to have in place Incident Managers and Safety Wardens for every school and every classroom.
# A Safety Compliance Certificate is to be issued to each school before reopening by a Quality Assurance Department.
# Only Hostel/Accommodation attached to the school will be permitted to function for ease of logistics and travel challenges.
# Pupils and Teachers to be certified COVID-19 free before being accommodated in the school's premises.
This indeed is a welcome development as it could be recalled that the Federal Government declared recently that no decision has yet been taken on allowing candidates to sit for the WAEC examination.
Stakeholders in the educational sector had voiced their concerns over the Federal government's position." Keeping the students at home will lead to frustration and Criminality.," they had pointed out.
