The plan of the Federal Government of Nigeria to lift the ban on twitter is a good news to students and candidates of 2021 examinations (UTME, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB) in Nigeria. Before the ban twitter is the main source of live updates from the examination bodies. Since the ban on the microblog site, candidates have to depend on third parties for updates because the examination bodies do not operate social media accounts aside from Twitter.
Prior to the ban the twitter handle of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) was actively responding to enquiries on registration, collection of certificates, collection of results and sundry other issues. As soon as the ban was effected, WAEC's twitter handle became inactive. This made it mandatory for people to travel to WAEC offices for necessary enquiry. Checks show that the twitter handle of WAEC in Nigeria (@waecnigeria) was last active on June 1, 2021. If the ban is eventually lifted, updates about WAEC examinations will be available once again.
The Federal Ministry of Education used to post education updates, scholarship openings and workshop schedules on its twitter handle (@NigEducation). With the ban of twitter, such information were no longer accessible. By the time the government reopens twitter, parents and other stakeholders will be able to get direct information from the ministry.
Soon after the results of 2021 Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME) were released, there were rumours of rescheduling the examination and upgrading of UTME scores. Unfortunately, JAMB could not debunk the rumours in real time. The examination body had to spend money to organize press conference. With a lifting of the ban, JAMB will be able to clear the air at no cost.
At the end of the day, students will be one of the major beneficiaries of the restoration of twitter in Nigeria.
