Taiwo Akinkunmi also known as the"Flag Man" was born into a humble family on May10 1936 but right now , his name will forever be remembered in the history of Nigeria. For the identity of Nigeria was solidified by him.
Taiwo who is now 84 was born in Ibadan, he had part of his education in the North before coming back to the South with his father to finish his education . He went to Ibadan Grammar school in 1949 and graduated in 1955 before becoming a civil servant in Secretariat in Ibadan.
After working for sometime,he gained admission into the Norwood Technical college in London studying electrical engineering. It was during this period that he designed the Nigeria Flag.
He claimed to have seen the competition entry in a library, Taiwo said; "I took details of what is [to be] expected to design a flag that would be used by a country that was about to witness [its] independence. I took part in the competition and my design was selected as the best in the year 1958."
He was just 23 years old when he became Nigeria hero was given £100 (N42000) in 1959 for his effort.
