Recently, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) gave the Federal Government from now till Tuesday, the last day of August to implement the agreement they signed with them otherwise, they would embark on strike. In a recent report by Punch Newspaper, it was gathered that the Federal Government no longer responds or replies the phone calls of ASUU Chairman, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, which might probably end up making the strike action feasible.
It is noteworthy that ASUU had embarked on a nine-months strike sometime last year just because of the same issue that wants to lead to another strike action this year. Inasmuch as the strikes are aimed at persuading the government to fund Nigerian Universities, it is also notable that the previous strike action drastically affected Universities' academic calendar which is yet to be fixed. Indeed, the education system is becoming quite unfavorable for Nigerian students.
On this note, it would not be a good idea for students to go on academic strike even if ASUU strike finally holds. In other words, students should not be allowed to observe ASUU strike without means of studying. It is in my best interest to opine that all universities' lectures should create online platforms before Tuesday for the following reasons.
1. To Stay In Touch With Their Students
If students are left at home by virtue of ASUU strike without getting in touch with their lecturers, it will drastically reduce their interest in education and this might potentially put some of them at risk of dropping out from school. Hence, there is need for lecturers to create online platforms to keep their students motivated knowing fully well that the system will overcome its challenges in no distant time.
2. To Keep Their Students Busy With Assignments
Inasmuch as students would be expected to sit at home if ASUU strike holds, their lecturers really need to play the vital role of keeping them busy with Assignments in order to keep them studious while at home. Most importantly, this has to be done in order to reduce the illiteracy level in our society.
