THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Port Harcourt Branch, has frowned against secret recruitment of lecturers and non-academic staff in the university after the official process has been ignored. Amongst other things condemned by the union is the immission of the great citadel of learning among the constituted Governing Council of some federal universities.
The Chairman of ASUU, UNIPORT Branch, Dr Austen Sado, has expressed his unhappiness in a statement on released Tuesday. There he expounded on the secret recruitment and further said the act should have been transparent rather than made secret.
The exercise has been named a plot to employ incompetent, unqualified candidates for the job in a statement signed by Sado and titled, ‘Reconstitute Council, Stop Secret Recruitment,
The quoted statement is written below,
“For an interview for recruitment to hold, the board at the faculty, which is the appropriate organ for such an exercise, must be convened by the Dean or any other officer he or she may nominate to so act.”
Owing to the current COVID-19 pandemic with strict enforcement of inter-state boundaries, which was lifted only last week, the body has expressed a surprise on how the exercise was carried out. Some of the questions asked were when the interview was done, how they managed to gather crowd and how people were able to travel in the lockdown.
This has now be termed a violation of the rules and regulations and the protocol laid down by the Task Force of the Presidency in order to curb Covid-19 spread across the country.
Prof. Steven Okodudu, the Vice Chancellor of the University responded by declaring his innocence on the matter. This he said when asked about it and also added that he just resumed as the VC of the institution on Wednesday and had not been briefed on the matter
