Top Four Accredited Federal Polytechnics In Nigeria

According to information sourced from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Nigeria currently has thirty seven federal polytechnics. These institutions have the mandate to award National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). However, data obtained from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) show that only four of these schools have more than thirty six ND programs. These are the top accredited polytechnics. In this article we shall be taking cursory looks at these seven ND awarding institutions.

Topmost among these schools is Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). It is,also the oldest polytechnic in Nigeria. The school was originally named Yaba Technical Institute when it was founded in 1947. It was however rechristened Yaba College of Technology by the military government of Yakubu Gowon. Today, YABATECH has more than thirty seven ND programs listed in the current JAMB brochure. The college also runs degree programs in affiliation with University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The Second polytechnic in this category is Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY). This institution was founded by the government of Northern Region of Nigeria as Kaduna Technical Institute. It was later upgraded to the status of a polytechnic. During the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida, KADPOLY was nationalized. The institution now has more than thirty seven ND programs. It also runs university-affiliated degree programs as well as NCE programs. This institution arguably has the most diversified academic programs in Nigeria.

Federal Polytechnic, Mubi is one of the ND awarding institutions with the high level of accreditation in Nigeria. This institution (which is located in Adamawa State) was founded during the second republic. Like KADPOLY and YABATECH, this school has 37 ND programs.

Federal Polytechnic, Nekede is among these top schools (FPNO). It was originally established by the government of Imo State in Owerri. It was however acquired by the Federal Government in 1993. FPNO presently has thirty six ND programs.
