According to William Shakespeare, some individuals are born great, others achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Professor Cyril Onwumechili has achieved great success in his chosen sector.

Professor Onwumechili did not only become a professor at the age of 30 but he was also named Vice-Chancellor of three universities, one of which never saw the light of day.

In the year 1932, Onwumechili was born in the town of Inyi, Oji River, Enugu State. He went to Kings College Lagos, and after he graduated, it was said that he was the brightest student the institution had ever had.

After that, he earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of London in 1953 and a master's degree in physics from the University of Ibadan in 1954. Later, the University of London awarded him a Doctorate.

Onwumechili was employed as a member of the Department of Physics at the University of Ibadan. In 1962, he was promoted to Professor and named Head of the Department of Physics and Dean of the Faculty of Science at Ibadan, before moving to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1966 to become Head of the Department of Physics.

During the Nigerian Civil War, he was named Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt. He became Dean of the University of Nigeria's Faculty of Science after the Civil War.

In 1973, he became the first Dean of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka's Faculty of Physical Sciences, and he was re-elected three times.

Prof. Onwumechili then rose through the ranks of the University of Ife to become Vice-Chancellor (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

He has published over a hundred scientific papers in major national and international journals, as well as contributing to several books.

Also, he had served either as Chairman or member of over two hundred boards, including Councils of Universities and Boards of organizations.
