Lagos State University to accept Postgraduate Medical Fellowship Qualification for applying VC

The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos State, has repealed its initial stand to make Ph.D. degree measures for Medical and Dental professionals who are interested in the post of VC (Vice-Chancellor) in the institution.

LASU published three adverts in different newspapers on the 25th, 28th, and 30th of last month stating that the possession of a postgraduate Medical Fellow will not be welcomed as qualifications for candidates who want to apply for a vacant position of VC in the school.

Regardless, the institution in an advert again, signed by the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, states that postgraduate Medical Fellowship qualification is acceptable and those possessing it are eligible to apply for VC at LASU.

The change was made about two weeks after a Joint Council and the Senate Selection Committee for the appointment of the LASU's 9th VC, Professor Fidelis Njonkama resigned after all efforts to convince the Governing Council to include postgraduate Medical Fellowship as one of the criteria for the appointment of a distinctive VC for LASU.

Prog Fidelis's sacrifice and efforts have paved the way for others in the medical line to reach the height of VC.

Postgraduate Medical Fellow is a program undertaken by medical doctors and dental surgeons in which they have to take at least three exams to attain the rank of a consultant which is almost equivalent to a Ph.D. A minimum of ten(8) years is required after graduation to attain such level, that is, after house job and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which take two years to complete both.

A welcome development by LASU!

And hope this extends to other institutions!
