The issue between ASUU and Federal Government is beyond COVID-19

Reports of the Academic Staff Union of Universities advising the Federal Government not to reopen school until 2021 has been making waves on the internet for a while. But, the Chairman of the revered union has come out to debunk such claim.

The ASUU Boss in debunking the claim stressed that, there is a misconception. According to Prof Ogunyemi, what ASUU actually said was that the Federal Government should only allow the reopening of schools when it is absolutely safe for students.

In his interview with popular newspaper, The Punch, The OOU lecturer reinstated that, the government should look beyond developing guidelines on paper but, the guidelines should be fully implemented for the safety of the parties involved.

In the interview, the ASUU Chairman also made it clear that, even if schools are reopened, Universities won't reopen because, there's an unresolved issue between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

"Talking of universities, it should be noted that the crises are beyond COVID-19. There are fundamental crises that will make universities reopening longer and impossible for now.

We had long told the government our position and until they meet necessary conditions, universities are not resuming even after COVID,” Ogunyemi said.

Do you think the ongoing conflict between the Union and the Federal Government will be coming to an end anytime soon?
