ASUU Strike: The Biggest But Silent Brunt Bearers

Many groups in the University system bear the brunt of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The groups and the brunts they bear include:

1. The University System: disruption in the academic calendar, which leads to manpower and resource losses.

2. ASUU Members: hampered career growth, missed opportunities, no salaries.

3. Students: delayed graduation prospects, idleness, exposure to unintended wrongdoings.

4. Parents: increased burden of spending more on the training of wards.

5. Society: increased consequences of idleness.

6. Campus Business Operators: businesses shut down, exposure to indebtedness and penury, exposure to untreated health challenges.

7. Government at all Levels: public outcry.

The private and social media have continuously spoken for groups 1-5 above. More so, the voices of the students and their lecturers are also heard through their unions. Meanwhile, the government media speak for the government.

However, the voices of the operators of students oriented businesses are never heard. Some of the affected businesses include - photocopying, bookshop and stationery stores, shuttle transport services, hair barbing and dressing salons, face and nail makeup operators, restaurants, tailors, second-hand clothing, etc.

The operators in the sixth group are suffering in silence, while they bear the biggest brunt of the strike. We, therefore, urge all parties in the lingering ASUU strike, to please, put more effort into resolving the trade dispute.
