Recently, there was a report on the Punch Newspaper about the recommendation by the National Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, that the Federal government should not reopen schools until 2021. According to the chairman, it is not yet safe for our schools to re-open. This statement has attracted serious criticisms from many angles with some replying by saying that the Federal Government should as well stop paying ASUU members' salary until 2021. Some of the people that replied the tweet on tweeter have wondered when ASUU started priotizing the welfare of students.
Our take on this statement is that it could be that ASUU is not ready to return to the classrooms as their pay is not affected by the Pandemic. Teachers and lecturers have been praying and hoping that schools should reopen so that they can go back to work. Only those in government schools are scared of reopening because according to them, it is not yet safe to do so. This suggests that the reason behind this call to keep our schools closed until 2021 could be because even as the schools are closed, ASUU has continued to receive salary. Should the government decide to equally suspend their salaries until whenever schools reopen, we may see ASUU championing a call for the re-opening of schools.
We believe that schools should be allowed to re-open, but in strict adherence to the guidelines provided by the NCDC as no one knows for sure, when the Pandemic will be over. If it were to be that ASUU members are working on coming up with a cure or vaccine for Covid-19 and has promised us that it will be ready by 2021, we would have seen reason to agree with them that schools should not reopen until 2021.
Do you think that it is better for our schools not to reopen until 2021?
