There are thirty six schools that are listed as Specialized Institutions by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Most of these institutions are owned by the federal government and easily admit candidates with low scores in the Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME). Federal School of Surveying (which was founded in 1908) is the oldest among these specialized schools. This school was originally attached to Colonial Survey Department in Lagos for the purpose of training Technical Assistants in Survey. The school was relocated to Ibadan, the capital Of western Region in 1926. Eight years afterwards, the institution was again moved. This time it was relocated to Oyo. The institution has National Diploma programs in Surveying and Geoinformatics, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography and GIS and Computer Science.
The second federal specialized institution is the Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan (FCCIb) whic was originally established in 1943 as Co-operative Training School. In 1957, the status of the institution changed. This informed the renaming of the institution to Cooperative College, Ibadan. After the Western State was split into three (Ondo, Ogun and Oyo) states in 1976, the college came under the control of the federal government. It was therefore rechristened Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan. The college now has more than four ND programs including Cooperative Economics and Computer Science.
Another specialized institution that admit candidates with low UTME scores is the Federal Training Centre (FTC), Ikoyi which was founded in 1957. The institution was established to train clerical and secretarial staff for the public service. Currently, there is one FTC on each of the geopolitical zone of Nigeria. These institutions runs programs in Computer Science and business related courses.
