The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), chaired by Biodun Ogunyemi, has been attacked by some Twitter users over its declaration of support to the federal government and the advice to keep schools shut until 2021.
All schools and institutions of learning across the country have been shut down since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But during an interview on Saturday, Biodun Ogunyemi, the ASUU president, had advised the federal government to keep schools closed until proper protective measures are being put in place.
Ogunyemi has said Nigerians should learn from Kenya which he said they have closed all their schools till next year. "They too have exams to write; safety should be considered first. If it means shutting the schools until next year to protect the lives of Nigerian children and guarantee the health of all Nigerians, let it be so” he said.
This statement of his, however, did not favor a number of Nigerians who took to the social media platforms to express their feelings and to pour out their annoyance. Some, however, who felt there is nothing wrong with the Union suggestion had also made their comments to show support for the chairman.
A portion of Twitter users also suggested that the government should stop paying their salaries until school reopens in 2021.
Another commenter have said "ASUU is really happy with this whole pandemic since they don’t want schools to open until 2021, then, they should not be paid their salaries until 2021 as well. Allow these people to graduate please.” a Twitter user said.
Another user also commented "For ASUU it is always BAD NEWS, they are either on strike or threatening to embark on one. They don’t like to work, and luckily for them, they find an excuse in COVID 19. Can ASUU please tell us what will happen in 2021? Are they developing a vaccine toward 2021? Impossible,”
A comment from another user says "They are very lazy. ASUU enjoy the holiday"
However, another user commented in favor of ASUU. According to her, we have to read before commenting. She said ASUU is right and the health of our students and staff should be our utmost priority. "Read before you comment, ASUU made a point and we all need to reason." The supporting user has said.
What is your own view concerning ASUU's suggestion?
Is 2021 right for the school to resume?
