Polytechnic may be better than University, see reasons

After the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board was announced, there have been many students asking questions like "between University and Polytechnic which is better?". In this article, we will be sharing reasons why universities may be better than Polytechnic and why Polytechnic may also be better than universities.

Why Polytechnic may be better than University

1. Polytechnic is well equipped for engineering courses, for example, you are going to study course like Science Laboratory Technology polytechnic is preferable because it is well equipped with laboratory equipment, that also goes with other engineering courses.

2. In the first two years of your study in polytechnic, it will award you will a National Diploma (ND) degree. And you can start working with that degree before going for your Higher National Diploma (HND) degree for another two years.

3. There is room for Industrial Training (IT) in the Polytechnic which prepares you for the practical aspect of your prospective profession. With that you will be well equipped with what the labor industry demands from you. With the practical teaching from Polytechnic, you can easily set up your own business or firm without working for someone.

4. Even with a JAMB score below average you can secure admission into any Polytechnic of your choice, which may not be easy to get admission into any university of your choice with a score below average.

Why University may be better than Polytechnic

1. More companies in Nigeria give higher recognition to those who graduated with a B.Sc. degree than an HND degree. You can understand this more clearly if you look into the latest vacancy in our national statistics.

2. To obtain your B.Sc degree in the University, you need to spend a minimum of four years, unlike the Polytechnic which you will spend five years (two years for HN degree One year for IT, and two years for HND degree). It also varies with your course of study. For example, courses like Nursing, Medicine, and pharmacy to mention a few, need more than four years.

3. Universities have more art courses than Polytechnic. Courses like Law, English, and Linguistics are a no-go area in the Polytechnic, these courses are only offered in the University.

4. Universities have more Science courses than Polytechnic. Courses like medicine, nursing, and pharmacy are only offered in the University. So, if you are going for any of the above choices, Polytechnic is a no-go area.
