Evidently, the history of the Nigerian educational system will be incomplete without including Professor Aliu Babatude Fafunwa. He was an educationists per excellence, and a great innovator. Prof. Fafunwa is believed to have been giving birth to on the 23rd of September, 1923, and he left the planet earth at the age of 87 in 2010.
Though he left us ten years ago, however, he will continue to be remembered in Nigeria for his patriotic deeds. He contributed immensely to the development of the Nigerian educational system. For instance, as the education minister in Nigeria, he introduced indigenous education into the curriculum of the country's education system.
He worked relentlessly in making sure that unborn Nigerians will understand the history and cultural values of the country. Professor Aliu Babs Fafunwas was an alumnus of the great CMS grammar school, Bethune Cookman University in United State, and the New York University.
It is important to state that prof. Fafunwa was the first Nigerian to earn a doctor of philosophy in education and the first to become a professor in education in Nigeria.
Before his demise, he taught at the University of Nigeria and Obafemi Awolowo University, formerly known as University of Ife. While at UNN and University of Ife, he held several important positions which include: Dean of faculty, Head of department, Acting Vice Chancellor, etc. Professor Babs Fafunwa was reported to have retired from active service in 1978, after years of meritorious service.
He was said to have married his beautiful wife in 1953, and the marriage produced wonderful children and grand children.
