Colleges of Education (COEs) are usually established to award Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). In order to award degree programs, many of these colleges have forged affiliation with approved universities. However, data obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) show that there are three state colleges of education that have multiple affiliations.
The first among these is the College of Education, Warri. This school was initially established in Benin City by the government of old Bendel State. It was later relocated to Warri and given its current name. With the creation of Delta State in 1991, the college came under the ownership of Delta State Government. In addition to its conventional NCE program, this school (which occupies a landmass of 27 hectares) runs degree programs in affiliation with University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka. Three degree programs are affiliated to UNIBEN while sixteen are affiliated to DELSU.
Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education (SRCOE), Kumbotso is the second COE in this category. It was originally established as Advanced Teacher’s College by Kano State government under Governor Rimi in 1981. According to the institution’s website, it was renamed college of education 1982. It was later renamed after the late wife of the founding governor of the school. At present, the college runs five degree programs in affiliation with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and eight with Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
Another COE in this list is Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto. This college which belongs to Sokoto State has dozens of NCE programs. It also runs degree courses in affiliations with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). It has 8 programs under ABU and 12 under UDUS.
