Twenty private universities received operational approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2021. Six of these institutions are located in Southern Nigeria with one, two and three respectively in the South West, South-South and South East. Let us explore these six institutions.
James Hope University is the only new university in the South West. It is located in the Lekki axis of Lagos State. The institution is established by Jim Ovia. It is conceived to be the under the leadership of its pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Chukuka Sam Enwemeka.
The second Southern university is Top Faith University, which is located in Mpatak area of Akwa Ibom State. This university was founded by Emmanuel Thomas Abraham (PhD). The pioneer Vice Chancellor of the institution is Professor Patrict James Ebewo.
Havilla University (HUNI) is the third university in the South and one of the three in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. This institution is located in Cross River State. This school will sits on an landmass of 228 hectares in Ikom local government area of the state was established by Jones Ayuk Ojong Tangban.
Mudiame University is located in Irrua, Edo State. The founder of the university is Professor Sunny Eromosele Eboh.
It the two new universities located in Imo State. The institution is established by Reverend Chukwuemeka Ngubo who is the founder and General Overseer of the Living Word Revival Assembly Church. The school runs academic programs across three faculties under the leadership of its vice chancellor, Ogwo Ekeoma ogwo who is a professor of Marketing.
The sixth new university in Southern Nigeria and the second in Imo State is the Claretian University of Nigeria which belongs to the Claretian Missionary Fathers of Eastern Nigeria. The Chairman of the university Board of Trustees is Reverend Father Henry Omonisaye while the Vice Chancellor is Reverend Father Wenceslaus Madu, a former rector of imo State Polytechnic.
