How English words are formed

English words are formed by different methods and students of English language needs to understand these methods. The methods are explained below:-

1. Words are formed by AFFIXATION

This is done by joining prefixes and suffixes to base words: examples

Auto + pilot = Autopilot

im + possible = impossible

In + human = inhuman

2. By ACRONYMS

these are words whose letters form its meaning. E.g

AIDS: Acquired Immune Defficiency Syndrome

WAEC: West African Examination Council

NEPA: National Electric Power Authority

3. CLIPPING

This is a method of shortening words for convenience. E.g

Lab for Laboratory

Prep for prepaid

Exam for examination

Maths for mathematics

4 By Blending

This is a method of shortening two separate relevant words to form a new word. E.g

Cybernetic + organism becomes Cyborg

Smoke + fog becomes smog

Electric + execute becomes electronic

5. By INITIALISMS

This is a method of abbreviation but whose letters cannot be pronounced as a single word. Instead, the letters are pronounced separately.

NYSC = National Youth Service Corps

CAC = Corporate Affairs Commission

USA = United states of America.
