College Education

Federal Institutions That Award NCE

Source: NCCE

The mandate for awarding the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) is primarily given to the colleges of education and these colleges of education are regulated by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). In recent years, some institutions other than colleges of education have been given approval by NCCE to offer and award NCE programs. The regulatory body categorize these set of schools as "POLYTECHNICS OFFERING NCE PROGRAMS" and "OTHER NCE-AWARDING INSTITUTIONS". My concern in this article is with the schools belonging to the federal government among the "OTHER NCE-AWARDING INSTITUTIONS".

First on my list is the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN). NINLAN was established in Aba, Abia State in December 1993 under the military regime of General Sani Abacha. The main campus of the institution sits on approximately 210 hectares of land. The institute was set up to promote teaching, learning and research in Nigerian languages. The primary focus of the institution is non-native speakers of Nigerian languages. In 2019, NINLAN made history when it got approval of the NCCE to run nineteen NCE programs. With this achievement, admission into the school can now be sought through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The second institution in this category is Nigerian Army School of Education (NASE). This school was established in Ilorin in 1970. It as a branch of the Nigerian Army Education Corps. The institution is now listed among NCE-awarding institutions in JAMB brochure.

The third non conventional institution that awards NCE is the National Teachers' Institute (NTI), Kaduna. This institution was established in 1976 to train teachers for our primary and secondary schools. The institution has evolved from awarding Teacher's Grade II Certificate (TCII) and NCE. The institution now awards first degrees and Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

What do you think about these institutions? You can express your views through the comment box.
