National Identification Number is a unique number which identifies you throughout your life time and it is issued to you by NIMC after your enrolment. It matches you with your biometric data and other details in the National Identity Database during verification and authentication
It could be recalled that barely four months ago, Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu ordered the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) to make it compulsory for candidates registering for JAMB to have their respective NINs.
The Senate on Tuesday has however mandated the Ministry of Education, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to review the implementation of the NIN
The senate gave two options:that it is either there is an extension of Jamb registration deadline or the requirement of NIN is suspended for prospective students until there is a well organised process for obtaining the NIN.
The motion was raised by Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP-Anambra). He said that the action taken by JAMB to include NIN as a pre-condition for registration of UTME candidate is inconsiderate and a premature decision. Ubah further stated that there are long queues at NIMC centers which means that a well organised process is still required to ease the stressful process of registration
Seconding the motion, Senator Uche Ekwunife (PDP-Anambra) mentioned that it is insentitive not to allow students register for JAMB and NECO because they don't have NIN. He further stressed that awareness has not been taken to the grassroot;many children students don't even know the need for NIN because there is no public awareness.
The resolution have now been assented by the senators and Senate President, Ahmad Lawan
