Opinion: "Why January 18, 2021 schools resumption date should be suspended"

The Federal Government has asked schools to start again on January 18, 2021, after “due meeting” with stakeholders.

The conclusion was attained after a conference with stakeholders, encompassing Governors, Commissioners of Education, Proprietors and pilots of institutions, personnel coalitions and students

Ben Goong, the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, in a message on Thursday, announced the agreement at the conference was that the reopening date of 18th January should not be changed, while parents and higher institutions ensure full submission with COVID-19 strategies.

The meeting, however, insisted on the compulsory wearing of facemasks by all students, teachers and workers in all schools.

Other gauges arrived at during the conference included mandatory temperature inspections and hand cleaning facilities at strategic areas in all schools, guaranteeing a steady supply of water and hand sanitisers and enforcement of keeping of social distancing and doldrums of large meetings such as assembly and calling upon days.

In my opinion, the reopening of schools can accelerate the spread of the virus, Vaccination should be done first before the presumption.

The Federal Government should cancel the resumption date, as the reopening of schools and colleges can trigger another lockdown in the country.
