The institutions that offer National Innovative Diploma (NID) are known as Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs). Data obtained from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) indicate that Nigeria currently has one hundred and sixty nine IEIs. Most of these schools have a couple of academic programs. There are only four institutions that have more than half a dozen courses in this category. These ones have the capacities to admit students across a wide range of programs. Let us look at these IEIs.
The first one on my list is Benson Idahosa School of Basic and Applied Studies (BISBAS), Benin City. The founder of this institution is Bishop Faith Emmanuel Benson Idahosa. According to NBTE, BISBAS was established in 2013 but was verified by the regulator body and commenced academic activities in 2014. This institution has the highest number (10) of NID programs among the IEIs in Nigeria. The rector of this school is Professor Mark Ighile.
The second IEI is the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Models Skills Training Centre (MSTC), Abuja. This institution was established in 2011 by the ITF to provide industry relevant training to young school leaver. In 2016, this institution (which is owned by the federal government) however received the approval of NBTE to offer and award NID in nine technical courses.
International Vocational Technical Enteprenuership Centre (IVTECH). This Kwara State Government owned school became operational in 2018 when Dr Ade Somide, a US educated Political Scientist was appointed as rector. It was however accredited by the NBTE in 2019. The institution currently has seven NID programs.
Another IEI is Imperial College of Advance Studies (ICAS). This college, which is located in Kano State, was registered with the CAC in 2017 but received operational approval in July, 2021. It is expected to take off with seven programs.
Like all other IEIs, admissions into these institutions are sought through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board.
