Both Polytechnic and University are educational institutions that offer higher study programs to aspirants. Both Polytechnic and University require that you must sit for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board exam.
As Polytechnic and University have some common features, they are also many differences between the two. Firstly, University offers educational courses in almost all disciplines of study, which cover courses in areas of arts, science, law, engineering, business, and also medical courses. These courses offered in the University may take up to 4-6 years depending on your course of study.
Polytechnic, on the other hand, offers educational courses in a particular stream of study. Most of the polytechnic, offer education in a way to improve the practical and technical skills of their students. They mainly offer Diploma or certificate courses which can be completed within a short period.
Another difference is that universities will honor you with a B.Sc. degree after completing your four years course, while Polytechnic will award you with National Diploma (ND) degree after completing your first two years with them, and if you decide to go further for another two years, it will then award you a Higher National Diploma (HND) degree in your course of discipline. In Nigeria, B.Sc is equivalent to HND.
The last difference is that most Federal universities require you to get a minimum score of 200 in your JAMB exam. While most state Universities require a minimum of 180 scores in your JAMB exam. On the other hand, polytechnic requires 130, 140, and 150 as their cut-off marks.
