"Even If FG Reopens Schools, Nigerian Universities Will Not Resume": ASUU Speak On School Resumption

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has spoken concerning the reopening of schools in Nigeria, as it says all Universities in Nigeria will not resume even if the Federal Government reopens schools.

The President of the union, Professor Abiodun Ogunyemi, made this known in a telephone interview with Premium Times, today Sunday, 19th July, 2020.

The President explained that the earlier indefinite strike declared by the council before the nationwide lockdown is still on, and thus, with that, it is possible tertiary institutions may not reopen even after the Federal Government reopens schools.

He also said that the Federal Government has been talking about the reopening of schools for exiting students in Primary and Secondary Schools, yet, nothing has been said concerning students in tertiary Institutions.

He also explained that asides the current global crisis, there are several other crisis that can make the reopening of schools for tertiary institution students longer and impossible for now.

He said that until the Federal Government can meet all necessary conditions provided by the council, universities will remain closed.
