Nigeria currently has forty nine federal universities going by records obtained from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The sizes of the faculties of these ivory towers depend on the number of academic programs they have. According to NUC, the largest Faculties of Arts in our federal universities have twelve or more academic programs. There are only four institutions in this category.
The first among them is the University of Ibadan (UI), the premier university in Nigeria. The school was established in Oyo State as a college of the University of London with courses in the faculties of Arts, Sciences and Medicine. It however became an autonomous institution in 1962 following the independence of Nigeria from Britain. The Faculty of Arts of UI has 17 undergraduate programs making it the first in Nigeria.
The second university in the category is the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). According to NUC records, this school was opened in 1960 by the first premier of the Eastern Region of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe. This makes it the first indigenous university in the country. UNN currently has fourteen departments in its Faculty of Arts making it the second in Nigeria.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife is the third university in this list. It was founded by the South West Government as University of Ife in 1962. It was however acquired by the federal government by military fiat in 1975. After the dead of Pa Obafemi Awolowo, the institution was rechristened after the late sage. OAU currently has 12 departments in its Faculty of Arts.
The fourth university that has more than ten Arts courses is the University of Jos (UNIJOS). The school which began as a campus of UI was upgraded to an autonomous institution in 1975. UNIJOS currently boasts of 12 undergraduate Arts disciplines. As obtained in many top universities, Faculty of Arts is one of the largest in UNIJOS
