The Federal Government on Monday, announced what it called "safe re-opening" of schools as part of the gradual easing of the 3-month-old lockdown in the country

This disclosure was made after the Presidential Task force on COVID-19 submitted its report to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although, the Federal Government noted that only students in graduating classes were permitted to resume in order to prepare for their examinations while others are expected to remain at home.

This means that only students in primary 6, JSS3 and SS3 were permitted to resume so as to prepare for their examinations, other students are expected to remain at home

However, since the news emerged, some fake news have emanated crediting the Federal Government to giving the exact date for re-opening as Monday, July 6, 2020.

It is important to know that such reports are false and misleading as the government did not set any exact date as the re-opening of schools, instead it noted that due dates would be communicated soon

While announcing the re-opening of schools alongside lifting the ban on inter-state travel among others, during the daily briefing on Monday, June 29, 2020, Boss Mustapha, chairman of the Presidential Task force did not disclose any exact date for the re-opening.

"Specifically, however, the following measures shall either remain in place or come into effect:

Permission of movement across state borders only outside curfew hours with effect from 1st July, 2020;

“Enforcement of laws around non-pharmaceutical interventions by States, in particular, the use of face masks in public places;

“Safe re-opening of schools to allow students in graduating classes resume in-person in preparation for examinations;

“Safe reopening of domestic aviation services as soon as practicable," part of the statement reads.

It is necessary to disregard any exact date for the re-opening of schools from unreliable sources, pending the time the Federal Government officially set an exact date for students to resume nationwide.

What is your take on schools being re-opened by the Federal Government? Do you think it was an unnecessary decision at this stage?
