Information obtained from the National Universities Commission (NUC) reveals that there are currently ninety nine private universities in Nigeria. The NUC licensed the first three private universities in 1999. The first South West university to receive accreditation of federal government is Babcock University.
The University was originally established in 1959 by the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church as Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA). In 1975, the institution was renamed Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) and got affiliated with Andrews University, Michigan in USA. With this development, ASWA was able to award Andrews University degrees in Biology, Business Administration, History, Religion and Secretarial Studies.
In 1988, ASWA reached agreement with Andrews University to award Master of Arts. In the late 1990s, the SDA church applied to the Federal Ministry of Education for the establishment of a private university with the name Babcock University. The approval was announced by the Federal Military Government on April 20, 1999. The Minister of Education handed the Certificate of Registration to the Pioneer Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, Pastor Luka T. Daniel on May 10, 1999.
The first set of students of the Babcock University (BU) were admitted in September 1999. Currently, the institution has ten faculties that cut across all academic areas. The university library boasts a collection of modern books in print abd digital forms.
The school is run according to the tenets of SDA Church. Thus, all members of the BU community are expected to participate in the Sabbath hours from morning to evening on Saturdays. To make this easier, academic and office activities close by 1pm on Fridays.
Some notable graduates of the university are David Adedeji Adeleke (also known as Davido) and Edward Adebo Ogundoyin (current Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly). The institution has cemented itself as one of the best private universities in Nigeria.
