It was sad for the world when the news of the passing of Late actor, Chadwick Boseman, reached the media. Currently, the actor now stands as the only ninth actor to be nominated for a posthumous Academy Award. If the actor is given the award or shall I say if he wins the award of Best Actor for his role in "MA Rainey's Black Bottom," he will make somewhat worth to be called historical, as he will be the second person to win the award after their death. Th first person was Peter Finch, who died just two months before the 1977 Oscar and won the award for Best Actor for his work in "Network."
However, it isn't really the award that has got people talking since the award ceremony, rather, it is the Strange- perhaps a less harsh word, like Unique will suffice- way the Oscar's are honoring Boseman.
We should perhaps begin at the NFT. What is an NFT? Well, according to The Verge, NFT stands for Non-fungible token. Now an example of a fungible token is bitcoin, something that you can trade for another. As you know, you can trade but pin for another and still end up with bitcoin. Non-fungible on the other hand, is probably like a piece of art, something quite unique, or one of a kind, perhaps like a baseball card or couture fashion.
NFTs could be things ranging from Ethereum to bitcoin, mostly just the block chain subject classified as cryptocurrency or anything digital--drawings, music, etc. At the moment, people's reason for favoring NFTs is centered on digital art, which then reminds us of the tribute that was done in honor of Boseman at the Oscar, something all the nominees will be taking home with them, as a remembrance of the hero, and actor, Boseman.
In the Oscars, each nominee will receive a swag bag with each containing a 3D digital NFT tribute to Chadwick Boseman. The artwork which was done in 3D was created by Andre Oshea. The 3D artwork that these bags contain will then be auctioned off eventually and the proceeds will be used in a donation to the Colon Cancer Foundation.
Chadwick Boseman lost his life in the summer of 2020, at the age of 43, to colon Cancer which is why the proceedings from his tributary swag bags are to be donated to a Colon Cancer Foundation. The artist who made these artwork, Oshea, revealed via a post on his Instagram page on April 24, 2021, with a photo of Boseman NFT that "The way to immortalize an artist is to honor them with art," she captioned the post. "I was tasked to create a tribute NFT for Chadwick Boseman for the Oscars! Bringing this piece to life has been one of my most challenging & rewarding experiences as an artist."
Though despite the good intentions that was obviously intended behind the actions of Oshea, many of Bosemanvs fan aren't taking it lightly. A lot of them are coming for the artist and the Oscars, calling his actions," disrespectful." A Twitter user, tweeted, "The Chadwick Boseman nft thing is so effing disrespectful can his estate sue that guy and the academy???“ Another tweeted, "NFT of chadwick boseman in oscars swag bags is possibly the most cursed sentence i could've read today," while another claimed they were "sick to [their] stomach."
Though despite the attacks on the gift bags and the hate it has gotten from many, one Twitter user who showed appreciation called it "beautiful and life changing for man."
