Meet Some Nigerian Celebrities Who Have Directly Or Indirectly Ventured Into Politics

It has become common for celebrities who are successful in their expertise to go into politics and other fields. Here is a comprehensive list of Nigerian entertainers that have in one way or the other shown interest and have also been appointed into public offices.

1. Muma Gee

Gift Iyumame Eke popularly known as Muma Gee contested for the Federal House of Representative in Abua/Odua and Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State under Peoples Democratic Party’s big umbrella.

2. Desmond Elliot

Desmond, a talented actor, and producer in the Nigerian movie industry. He was sworn into office at the Lagos State House of Assembly as a member representing Surulere 01 Constituency after he contested for a seat in the Lagos state house of assembly in 2015 and won. 

3. Kate Henshaw

Kate Henshaw contested at the PDP primaries election for the position of the member representing Calabar South/Bakassi Federal Constituency but did not win. However, in December 2015, she was made Special Adviser, Liaison, Lagos to Cross River state.

4. Hilda Dokubo 

Hilda Dokubo, a seasoned actress, became one of the first Nigerian celebrities to get into politics. She was appointed Special Adviser on Youth Affairs to the former Rivers state governor, Peter Odili in the year 2000.

5. Ini Edo

Talented Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, was offered a political appointment as a Special Adviser on Tourism to the Akwa Ibom State Governor in February 2016.

6. 9ice

Singer, Abolore Akande popularly known as 9ice contested in 2015 for the House of Representative seat in Oyo State primaries but lost. The artist still got a political appointment as the Special Assistant on Youth matters to Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

7. Femi Adebayo

Femi Adebayo, a popular Yoruba actor was made the Special Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed on Arts, Culture, and Tourism in February 2016.

8. Richard Mofe Damijo

Richard Mofe Damijo was Commissioner of Culture and Tourism in Delta State from 2009 till 2015.

9. Bob Manuel

Veteran Nollywood actor, Bob-Manuel Udokwu contested for the position of a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly in Anambra state in 2015.

10. Mercy Johnson

On March 15th, 2017, Nollywood star, Mercy Johnson-Okojie was appointed as a Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Entertainment, Arts, and Culture.

11. Kanayo O. Kanayo

In 2011, Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo joined the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had an interest in the seat of House of Representatives, but unfortunately, he lost in the primary election.

12. Nkiru Sylvanus

In 2011, Nkiru Sylvanus was one of the first set of celebrities to venture into politics. She was appointed the Special Adviser on Lagos Affairs to the Imo State Government. Subsequently, she was later made Special Adviser on Public Relations to the same state Government.

13. Tony Tetuila

Anthony Olanrewaju Awotoye contested in the 2015 National Assembly election for the House of Representatives seat of his home constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which he lost.

14. Kenny Saint Brown

Ksb as she is fondly called contested for the Lagos state house of assembly Ikeja constituency under the APC but did not win.

15. Funke Adesiyan

Funke Adesiyan, a Nollywood actress who was aspiring for office in Oyo state as she contested for a seat in the Oyo State House of Assembly.

16. Dayo Adeneye

Dayo Adeneye is popularly known as D1, a Popular TV presenter, and co-founder of Primetime Entertainment indicated an interest in the Ogun State House of Assembly under the APC but lost.

17. Bukky Wright

Veteran actress, Bukky Wright also followed the train as she contested for a member of the House of Representatives at the Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

18. Kenneth Okonkwo

In December 2014 Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo who was interested in Nsukka/Igbo Eze South Federal Constituency seat suddenly lost interest in the PDP primaries.

19. Onyeka Onwenu

Onyeka Onwenu a renowned Nigerian singer who was formerly in charge of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture was appointed by former President Jonathan as the executive director/chief executive officer of the National Centre for Women Development in September 2013.

20. Iyanya Mbuk

Some months ago, the Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade appointed entertainer Iyanya, as Senior Special Assistant Tourism and Entertainment.
