Why the Nigerian Rap scene is dying

If you're a Nigerian who grew up in the late 2000's then of course you'll be familiar with the Nigerian rap scene which somewhat peaked during that time.

The 2000's blessed us with artists like MI, Ice Prince with the next decade bringing up rappers like Vector, Phyno, Olamide and others. The rap scene was one of the hottest sectors in music with occasional hit songs and chart toppers.

Back in 2021, it looks like the rap scene is going back to its darkest times again as most artistes prefer singing or at least singing/rapping in order to boost their career and end up going with the one which gave them their first hit song.

Rappers like Dremo, Zlatan and Naira Marley have found a way to diversity their music in order to get enough fan base support from the singing sector with ends up bringing in more revenue and streams for them.

Here are some of the reasons Nigerian Rap is slowly dying ;

1. LABEL CHOICES: Most record labels are mostly interested in finding "the new Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy" without trying to diversify their genre or raise up a new breed of music. They actually prefer feeding off the already established afro beats sound which makes artists consider if they're gonna make it through rap/singing.

2. NO ROOM FOR UNDERGROUND ARTISTES TO GROW: Most at times, Nigerians are interested in their favourites that they tend to ignore the upcoming/underground artistes. They prefer listening to the already established musicians hereby isolating most of the upcoming artist who need the exposure on a national level at least.

3. CREATING A NEW SOUND: When an artist decides to start rapping, they intend on kicking off where another artist left off( same flow/ pattern) instead of trying to create a new sound for themselves. Most music now seems like they're taken off previous songs due to the laziness to create a new sound.

They're likely more reasons why the rap sector is currently dying and in dire need of some fresh legs.
