Meet Bisi Lawrence, the Legendary news anchor who was a former employee at Radio Nigeria

In this write-up, we would be getting to know about Bisi Lawrence, the Legendary news anchor who was a former employee at Radio Nigeria.

There is hardly a Nigerian born in the 80s and 90s who does not know Bisi Lawrence of Radio Nigeria.

He was one of the most respected veterans in the Nigeria media industry amongst the likes of Great Ernest Okonkwo, Yinka Craig, Ishola Folorunsho, Tolu Fatoyinbo, among others.....

Bisi Lawrence was a maverick. A man of many parts and dimensions. A giant among men. A man for all seasons. He knew so much about so many aspects of life. His vast array of knowledge seemed infinite. Sometimes, it was simply bewildering.

Sports was only one of his many abiding passions; only one portion on the wide canvass on which this supremely talented artiste exhibited his intoxicating genius. He was indeed, a wise man!

The renowned sports administrator was born in Lagos on October 23, 1933. He spent two years at CMS Grammar School, Lagos before going to Christ School, Ado-Ekiti where he also spent two years.

As a lover of sports and an outstanding sports writer, he was head of Outside Broadcasting, Radio Nigeria. He was to work abroad where his employers tried to nationalise him but he declined because of his love for Lagos. He grew up in Campos area of Lagos and attended CMS Gramar School, Lagos.

This irrepressible gentleman was simply fabulous. As expected, Bisi Lawrence was the ‘glue’ that held this astonishing assemblage together. Simply put, his leadership was inspirational. Interesting times and even more interesting folks!

There was a special connection among Bisi Lawrence, Dele Adetiba, Fabio Lanipekun and Yinka Craig. In fact, it was this fascinating and special trio who worked under the leadership of Bisi Lawrence in a different era, who ingeniously decided in their collective wisdom that the best way to address their boss was simply to refer to him affectionately as “Egbons” instead of Egbon which probably without ultimate exactitude, should approximate in the Yoruba Language to ‘senior brother.’

He was a loyal soldier of Nigeria Football and was a leading member of our intellectual wing. He had facts and figures at his finger tips. He was an all-round organiser who knew how to deploy people to get the best out of them.

He was a celebrated Sport Anchor for many years.

May God bless his soul...
