6 Nollywood Actresses Who Studied At The University Of Benin (Photos)

University of Benin is a research university located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It is among the universities owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and was founded in 1970.

In this article, I will be sharing with you 6 nollywood actresses who studied there:

#1. Omoni Oboli

Omoni Oboli, born 22 April 1978, is a Nigerian actress, scriptwriter, film director, producer and digital filmmaker.

She studied at the New York Film Academy and has written several screenplays, including The Figurine (2009), Anchor Baby (2010), Fatal Imagination, Being Mrs Elliott , The First Lady and Wives on Strike (2016). In 2018 she starred and directed the comedy film, Moms at War.

Omoni began her movie career with her first movie role in Bitter Encounter (1996), where she played a secretary. Her next was Shame . She then went on to play the lead female character in three major movies; Not My Will ,Destined To Die and Another Campus Tale . After enjoying a brief career in 1996, Omoni left the movie industry to complete her university education. She married immediately after school and did not return to the industry until a decade later.

Omoni has several screenplays to her credit, including her film Wives On Strike as well as The Rivals , a movie she co-produced with her friend and won the prize for Best International Drama at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. It was the first Nigerian film to be premiered since the festival’s inception in 2003. The movie was given a 3-star rating out of 4 by the festival's judges.

Omoni has played lead roles in mainstream films, including: The Figurine (2009), Anchor Baby (2010), Being Mrs Elliot, and Fifty (2015). She is also the first actress from Nollywood to win Best Actress in two international festivals, (that are not organized by Nigerians or Africans), in the same year (2010). This she did at the Harlem International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Movie Awards for her lead role in the movie Anchor Baby.

In 2010, she won the award for Best Actress Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, and the award for Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival. Omoni was nominated for the Best Actress in a leading role award at the 2011 Africa Movie Academy Awards.

In 2014, she won Big Screen Actress of the Year award, at the 2014 ELOY Awards, for her movie Being Mrs Elliott . In 2015, Omoni was awarded the Sun Nollywood "Personality of the Year." She has directed several movies such as Being Mrs Elliott, The First Lady , Wives on Strike , and Okafor's Law.

On 14 August 2017, Omoni Oboli took to her instagram page to share a post announcing her new deal as the Brand ambassador of Olawale Ayilara's LandWey Investment Limited.

Omoni Oboli starred in the movie Okafor's Law , which premiered on 24 March 2017. However, the movie could not be screened at the premiere due to an injunction by the court. Oboli was accused of copyright infringement by Jude Idada, who claimed to have written part of the script for Okafor's Law. The movie was released on 31 March 2017.

Omoni Oboli set up a charity organization, "The Omoni Oboli Foundation " to use her celebrity status to bring well-needed relief to the plight of the less privileged women and children of Nigerian society. 

#2. Lota Chukwu

Ugwu Lotachukwu Jacinta Obianuju Amelia is a Nigerian actress popularly known as Lota Chukwu. She gained popularity after starring in popular Nigerian TV series, Jenifa's Diary alongside Funke Akindele , Juliana Olayode , Falz where she plays the role of "Kiki", a friend of the lead character, Jenifa. She is also a yoga fitness enthusiast.

Lota was born in Nsukka , Enugu State ,Nigeria but she had her childhood upbringing mostly in Benin City. Lota is the last of four children of her parents. She studied Agricultural Economics and Extension Service at the University of Benin, and subsequently Acting at the Royal Arts Academy in Lagos , Nigeria.

Before acting, Lota was a model and participated in the 2011 edition of Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, representing Yobe State. She started her acting in 2011 but became popular after appearing on Jenifa's Dairy and played the role of Kiki. She has also starred in movies like The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, Falling, Fine Girl, The Arbitration , Dognapped.

Lota was featured as the lead character in Reminisce 's Ponmile video as we as Aramide 's Why So Serious video.

In 2017, she announced the take off of her food show "Lota Takes", a cooking and lifestyle show which shows Lota in her elements as a food and nature lover. The show has featured several Nigerian celebrities including Adekunle Gold , Tosin Ajibade ,Aramide (musician) MC Galaxy.

#3. Enado Odigie

Helen Enado Odigie is an actress, model, TV host and founded an Event planning business called constellation events.

She began her career in the corporate world with stints in Nigerian telecommunications behemoth Globacom, and Pan African e-commerce giant, Jumia. The free-spirited and naturally-curious actress has been acting since she was a child and also works as an event planner. The last born of a big family, Enado is quickly building a fan base in Nollywood due to her effortless style and effervescent personality. She has appeared in numerous films including the critically acclaimed Joba, The Men’s Club and From Lagos with Love. Enado shares her passion for the creative industry with Azuka Ogujiuba.

Whenever she watched a movie or read a book, she usually goes into the closet to demonstrate what she just saw or read.

Her friends motivated and encourage her to take roles that built her courage to start acting. She narrated how she was forced by two of her friends; Open and Akin to go for an audition and she eventually got the role and that marked the beginning of her acting career.

Enado Odigie is from Benin city, Edo State, Nigeria. She is a graduate of University of Benin.

#4. Oghenekaro Itene

Oghenekaro Lydia Itene is a Nigerian actress, businesswoman and Humanitarian.

Oghenekaro Itene hails from Delta state and was born and raised in Benin City , a town in Edo State , Southern Nigeria. She is a graduate of the University of Benin. The youngest of six children, she quickly learned to express herself through performance. Her first encounter with acting was at age eight when she joined the drama club in her primary school.

Itene's acting debut came in 2013 in Shattered Mirror , a feature film directed by Lancelot Imasuen Oduwa, portraying Reverend Sister. Onyinye announced Itene as one to watch out for. She appeared as Simi in Lincoln's Clan drama series produced by Total Recall/ content Africa, A pan Africa Project. Her original plan was to work on one or two film projects and concentrate on her company Kadia Makeovers as a makeup artist. She stayed away from acting for a little under one year, returning in 2015, when she landed a role in Mnet Africa series Tinsel , as the wedding planner.

She appeared as Sonia in the feature film Glass House by Africa Magic Original Films/Mnet Production released in 2016, followed by the feature film, The Prodigal in which she played Tessy. In 2016, Itene landed a role in her first big-screen movie Esohe directed by Charles Uwagbai in the role Itohan. Itene completed a US tour where the movie Esohe premiered.

Esohe was selected to screen in Nollywood Travel festival in Toronto and will be released in cinemas later this year in the USA, U.K., Europe, and Nigeria.

#5. Matilda Obaseki

Matilda was born and raised in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, where she originally hails from.

She is the youngest child in a family of seven children.

Obaseki had her primary and secondary education in Benin City. She also left school where she was studying English Language at the University of Benin to focus on her acting career.

Matilda Obaseki started acting in 2007.

She came to limelight for her role as “Angela Dede” in the popular Africa Magic TV series “Tinsel”.

She also got her first role in the movie “A Place in the Stars” starring alongside Gideon Okeke and Segun Arize.

Matilda Obaseki got married to her husband, Arnold Mozia on September 21, 2013. The couple had welcomed their first child in August 31, 2012 and gave birth to their second born, a son, on January 1, 2015.

#6. Makida Moka

Makida Moka is an Egyptian-born Nigerian actress and model. She starred as Monye in the 2014 TV series Gidi Up , and played a rape victim in Emem Isong 's 2015 drama film Code of Silence . As a model she is a brand ambassador for Frankie and Co.

Moka was born in Cairo , Egypt to a Nigerian mother and father of Nigerian descent from Jamaica. She attended primary and secondary school education in Lagos , and then enrolled at the University of Benin . She had aspirations to become a geologist , working for an oil company. Despite not being tall, she fell into modelling, when she won the inaugural "Face of Sleek Nigeria" competition in 2009. She has received attention in African media outlets for her fashion sense. As a model she is a brand ambassador for Frankie and Co.

In 2015, Moka portrayed a gang-rape victim in Code of Silence , who is raped by a local politician and his aide. She found shooting the picture an "intense" experience, which traumatised her to the point that she was often in tears after scenes were cut. In 2016, Moka's starring role in Taste of Love , an African telenova being showed weekly on Africa Magic ,Silverbird Television and Africa Independent Television got her a nomination for "best lead actress" at the 2016 Nigerian Broadcasters Merit Awards.

In 2017, Moka played "Melanie" in the crime-comedy series Inspector K ; her character in the series was a young social media enthusiast who became a victim of fake information on the internet amidst a homicide. However, the libelous information from the blogger led to increased digital audience to her comfort. The web series received mixed to negative reviews, with Pulse calling it "unfunny", "stressful to watch" and a "disappointing whudunit". It also criticized the acting, production, dialogue and plotting. It got a 50% rating fromTrue Nollywood Stories , who acknowledged the cinematography and soundtrack as impressive. Culture Custodian titled it review "Inspector K Pays Homage To Social Media Yet Falls Flat", with Xplore Nollywood describing the final episode as surprising. She also acted as an Indian Ninja in the supernatural romantic comedy, Banana Island Ghost. Her character was later shown to be having an identity crisis in her complexion and descent.
