The arrest of veteran nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, by the military has caused mixed reactions from different quarters since it first surfaced online.

While the celebrity has denied being affiliated with IPOB or the ESN, the controversial material he was putting on, perhaps, sent a different message to the public. It is important to state that Agu has now been released by the military.

After Chiwetalu Agu's release, it is important that we examine the role igbo celebrities have to play amidst increased agitations in the South-East.
Celebrities like Chiwetalu Agu should understand that they exert considerable influence on the greater South-Eastern population as a result of their on-screen role. Many of these celebrities boast of millions of followers both on and off social media. Do they even understand how powerful they are as a result of these numbers?
If a normal civilian had done what Agu did, it would have gone largely unnoticed. Chiwetalu Agu's arrest dominated online and offline news space because of the influence and popularity he commands in the country. Why then can't igbo celebrities channel this influence into promoting the unity and oneness of a country that made them who they are?

A favorite quote of mine goes thus: you cannot curse a land and expect to reap a bountiful harvest from it. Nigeria has blessed these celebrities immensely, why then can they not use their influence to promote unity in a country that blessed them?
This is the time for Igbo celebrities to come out and educate the average Igbo man about the dangers of associating with secessionists and their agitations. It is a time for them to use their large influence and following for the greater good of the South-East and in extension, Nigeria.

It is indeed, a time for celebrities like Chiwetalu Agu to adorn national colours, rather than the controversial material he was seen putting on.
