The army said in a statement by its spokesman Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu that the actor was arrested for supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra.
"...Chiwetalu Agu was picked up for questioning while inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group," the statement read. The army also denied assaulting the actor.
Chiwetalu was seen wearing an outfit made from Biafran flag. He had earlier posted a picture of himself on Instagram wearing the outfit, but the photo has now been deleted.

Reacting to the arrest, Nollywood actor Walter Anga, meanwhile, expressed his displeasure in an Instagram post.
He wrote, ''A man that has spent almost his lifetime putting smile’s in every home even when you the man is out there struggling to put food on the table for your family...Na God go judge una."

Some reports said Chiwetalu was taken to 82 Division in Enugu.
President of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Emeka Rollas criticised Chiwetalu for wearing such regalia when he is aware of the state of things in the nation.
“I don’t know why he put on Biafra regalia. The state is hot," he was quoted as telling Vanguard.

He added that the guild is in talks with military officials to ensure Chiwetalu's release.
A former presidential aide Reno Omokri also had something to say about the arrest.
Mr Omokri said a known group of herdsmen hold press conferences and threaten revenge on Nigerians and also make provocative statements yet they are not arrested.
He wrote, "Chiwetalu Agu wore a Biafran flag and was arrested. Where is the justice?"

Omokri, who was one of former President Goodluck Jonathan's media aides, also said it was unfair for soldiers to arrest Chiwetalu when a known Islamic cleric had been speaking in favour of bandits and speaking ill of the military.
