Why 2021AFRIMA May Come With Surprises

The African Music Awards (AFRIMA) is a yearly award presentation event, where awards are given to successful artists in different categories. The 2021 edition is set to hold in Lagos between November 19 and 21.

Many music lovers are looking forward to seeing their favourite artists go home with awards in the categories that they were nominated. However, there could be shockers awaiting fans as big artists like Davido, Burna Boy and Wizkid may not win in their categories of nomination.

This year’s edition is already looking like something that will change the narrative. In the previous years, top artists like Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy have on different occasions clinched the awards in their different categories of nomination. With the rise of artists like CKay, Omah Lay and Buju, these Next Generation artists have had good outings this year. CKay’s ‘Love Nwatinti’ has over 15 billion Streams on TikTok and has also done many units in different countries.

Past experiences have shown that younger and up-and-coming artistes usually ask their fans to vote for them, since most of the categories are determined by voters. On the other hand, popular artists do not go canvasing for votes. As a result of this, some music analysts have argued that some of the big artistes may not win awards if they do not encourage their fans to vote for them.
