Opinion: Why Nollywood Actors Are Dumping Acting For Politics

The desire to diversify and dominate the political scene has been the driving force of most young and vibrant Nollywood actors, who are determined to register their political interest ahead of the 2023 general election.

Truth be told, the political class has all failed and the need to find a new method of expression, a new way of connecting people's desire for social change, and a new strategy for changing the narrative has become their political leanings. I am talking about the likes of Zubby Michael, Desmond Eliot, Ini Edo, Kate Henshaw, and a host of others who have all taken a bow out of the movie industry to join politics.

The one thousand and one questions craving for an answer is; why are Nigerian celebrities, specifically Nollywood stars, quitting acting for politics?

Read between the lines as I offer my honest opinion.

1. To become politically involved in matters of the Nation

Two things are key in life, fame, and power; when we talk about being famous, these guys are at the apex. They have all contributed tremendously to the growth of the Nigerian movie industry; I think it’s time for them to take a new leaf, imbibe new opportunities that will usher them into becoming visible in political matters of the State/Nation.

In the quest for power, Desmond Elliot quit acting in 2014 to join APC.

Today, he is a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere 01 Constituency, and Desmond Elliot making a lot of difference in his Constituency.

Likewise, those who bow out of the industry have been appointed to different political offices and are making a tremendous impact in their little corner.

2 To allow upcoming actors and actresses the opportunity to become more visible in the industry.

No doubt, the young shall grow and will taste success and defeat and learn to endure with both.

When we talk about success, these guys are successful in their careers, they have been in the industry for years, and have left good footprints for themselves; joining politics will allow upcoming actors to showcase their talents and become regular features in movies.

These are some reasons why actors are venturing into politics to allow the younger generations to grow in the industry.

If you were in their shoes, would you rather accept a political appointment and use your office to canvas for change, or will choose to remain in the movie industry?
