It's no longer news that the veteran Nollywood actor, Mr. Chiwetalu Agu earlier arrested by Nigerian Army, on Thursday, at the upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra state, has been released. Newsmen alleged that, he was arrested for wearing the Biafra regalia in public, but the Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, in a recent report, gave other reasons for his arrest.
According to him, Chinwetalu Agu was arrested for soliciting support for the proscribed Indegenious People of Biafra (IPOB). Adding that the army would not fail to apprehend any individual who continues to promote the group.
He further disclosed that, Chinwetalu Agu was taken into custody for demonstrating an uncharitable disposition that would apparently, negate peace and security in the southeastern region.
The army spokesperson said "The actor dressing in an attire with the IPOB’s colors and symbol, simply mean that he is inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group. Such act violates the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Read General Onyema Nwachukwu's statement below:
"The Nigerian Army recognizes the inalienable rights of the citizenry to freedom of movement and expression, but it is apparently a violation for any individual or group to incite the public to cause break down of law and order. For the avoidance of doubt and emphasis, the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) remains proscribed . Therefore, any individual or group seen to be projecting and advancing the cause or activities of the group is viewed as brazenly challenging the constitutionality of Federal Republic of Nigeria."
What is your take on this?
Do you believe that, Chinwetalu Agu dressing in an attire with the IPOB’s colors and symbol, simple mean, he is inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group, according to Nwachukwu?
