Recall that, Cross made it known during his conversation with Pere while they were still in the house that he wanted something with Maria outside the house but he realised nothing was going to happen with Maria, because he hates putting himself in an unhealthy situation.
She's the queen of "cruise"
He didn't put more pressure in his relationship with Maria because he believes she catches "cruise" more than anyone in the house. This alone made him step back in order not to be left out or being played in the house.
