7 Nigerian Musicians From Enugu State (Photos)

1. Runtown

Douglas Jack Agu who is well known as Runtown is a Nigerian singer, song writer and producer with diverse music style of hip hop, R&B and Raeggae.

Runtown rose to fame after the release of the hit single “Gallardo” featuring Davido and thus earning him a record contract with Eric Manny Entertainment owned by Prince Okwudili Umnyiora, the CEO of Dilly Motors.

The talented singer who was born on August 19, 1989 in Enugu, grew up partly in Abuja and Lagos where he had his primary education. He later moved back to Enugu to cvomplete his secondary education.

He is currently studying Fashion management at a Fashion school in New York City. Upon his return to Lagos from Enugu state with Phyno, Runtown started out professionally in 2007 while doing underground collaboration with artistes such as J.Martins and Timaya.

He rleased his first single “Runtown” as produced by Soge in 2007 and then in 2010, he dropped another single “Forever” which was accompanied with a music video directed by IvanEdd films. in 2014, Runtown soon gained the attention of fans with the single “Gallardo” featuring Davido which also earned him a multi million naira recording contract with Eric Manny entertainment.

He later released the video to “Gallardo” which featured cameo appearances from the likes of Skales, Phyno and Patoranking. The colorful and amazing visuals was shot and direcetd by Clarence Peters.

On 23rd November 2015, he dropped his highly anticipated debut album “Ghetto University” which features guest appearnces from the likes of Wizkid, Phyno, Uhuru, Antii and DJ Khaled.

In 2016, he released another hit single “Mad Over You” which stayed on top of charts for sevearl months. Ever since then, Runtown has been a force to reckon with in the industry dropping hits back to back from “For Life” to “Energy”.

2. Bracket

Bracket is a music duo, formerly trio, made up of Vast and Smash. Both hail from Enugu State and met at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where they were students. Initially covering other people's songs such as R. Kelly, Tupac and other American artistes at various entertainment venues the duo finally competed in Star Quest competition in 2002.

Their 'Least Expected' album released in 2009 with hit track 'Yori yori' which means sweetness in Igbo, brought them to the limelight with collaborations with artists such as P-Square and J.Martins. Since then the group has achieved remarkable commercial success with their uplifting songs that have drawn nothing but love from radio personalities as well as a motley blend of audiences from far and near.

Bracket released their second album 'Cupid Stories' in 2011 with hit track "Girl featuring our young talented artiste Wizkid.

3. Zoro

Owoh Chimaobi Chrismathner aka Zoro Swagbag or just Zoro was born on March 20, 1990 in Onitsha, Anambra state. He is a native of Agwu in Enugu state, Nigeria.

Zoro who raps mostly in the Igbo Language and Pidgin English came into the spotlight with his hit single "042" which was closely followed by "Otu", "Owu sa gi, Safe journey”, "Landlord", “Ogene” featuring Flavour N'Abania which was later remixed with Lil Kesh and Ycee featuring and then most recently, “Buy the Bar” featuring Falz the Bahd guy.

An avid promoter of the Igbo culture, Zoro's 'Swag bag' is indeed felt in the Eastern parts of Nigeria.

He has worked with artistes like Awilo Longomba, Slow Dog and Flavour, Lil Kesh and Ycee.

He is an Ambassador for the 'Hero' brand.

4. Stormrex

Yvonne Akuabata Ogbuogu popularly known by her stage name as Stormrex is a famous Nigerian singer, songwriter, recording artist, stage performer and a model. She is currently 34 years old. She is originally from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria but grew up in Enugu Coal City. She completed both her primary and secondary school education in Enugu, Nigeria and obtained both her First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.

After her primary and secondary school education, Stormrex proceeded to Enugu State University of Science and Technology in Enugu, Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry.

5. Frank Edwards

Frank Ugochukwu Edwards popularly called Frank Richboy was born in Enugu state on July 22, 1990 to a big family of seven.

Growing up was difficult for young Frank as he was usually hawking in the streets of Enugu. His childhood dream was to become a Pilot but he changed career path because he wanted to be more like his pastor, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome who loves to sing.

He started playing the Piano at the age of 10, inspired and tutored by his father. The turning point of his career came when his pastor, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome after listening to the songs he had been recording asked him to sing in a Church Service. His first album, 'The Definition' debuted in 2008 and was distributed by Honesty Music. He released 'Angels on the runway' in 2010 and 'Unlimited' in 2011 and subsequently, Tagjam in thesame year.

His album 'Frankincense' caught everyone unaware when it topped Beyonce and Adele's albums within few hours of release on itunes album chart. He has a record label, 'RockTown' which has produced a lot of musical talents including Gil Joe, King BAS, Divine, Nkay, Soltune, David and others.

He has worked with some of the biggest gospel artiste in the world, including collaborating with famous gospel artist, Don Moen in 2015. Frank Edwards has revolutionalized the Nigerian Gospel Music, introducing a new and exciting blend of rock fused with a little pop and fuji. He has been nominated for several awards including- Gospel Artiste of the year 2011 at the 6th annual Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Nigeria Gospel Awards, 2012.

Frank Edwards dated a 19 year old girl - Chisom but they broke up in 2012, before which he was heavily criticized for dating someone of that age.

6. Illbliss

Born Tochukwu Melvin Ejiofor on 30, December in Enugu State, Ill Bliss is a rapper, lyricist, hip hop recording artiste and music executive. He was a member of the now defunct Da Thorobreds, a hip hop group that consisted of names like Obiwon and Elajoe.

Ill Bliss released his first album Dat Ibo boy in 2009 and has put out 2 other studio albums since then. He set up The Goretti Company, an artiste management platform to manage his career and those of other selected upcoming artistes. The Goretti Company has been responsible for launching the solo careers of MTN Project Fame alumni like Chidinma, Mike Anyasodo and Monica Ogah.

Ill Bliss’ The Goretti Company entered a joint venture agreement with Capital Hill, a recording company fronted by Clarence Peters. This business arrangement has released new music from Chidinma, Phyno and Ill Bliss himself and has introduced newbies like Fefe and Mz Kiss.

7. Masterkraft

Born as Sunday Ginikachukwu Nweke, Masterkraft is a disc jockey, band director, record producer, pianist, and songwriter from Nigeria.

He is associated with the genres R&B, Afrobeat, Gospel, Highlife, Soul, and Jazz. He began his music career professionally with the label Kennis Music and went on to work with a large number of celebrities and musicians, including Sound Sultan and Tamiya. His debut and only studio album to date is ‘Unlimited’, which was released in 2017.

Some hit songs produced by him include ‘Girl’ by Bracket, ‘Kwarikwa (Remix)’ by Flavour N'abania, and ‘Fine Lady’ by Lynxxx featuring Wizkid. He was listed 8th of the Top 10 music producers of Nigeria in 2014 by the Leadership newspaper. He also won the Nigeria Entertainment Awards for the ‘Best Music Producer Of The Year’ in 2014.
