It is no longer news that Pastor Bimbo Odukoya of the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos, died in a plane crash in 2005. It is also no longer news that his husband, Pastor Taiwo, Odukoya, had taken another wife.
Their first child, Tolu, has explained why their father remarried despite the love she had for his late wife. She stated, “That period wasn’t easy for him. My dad was becoming an old man, suddenly. When I came back from America, he was looking like a 70-year-old man. I saw him seated on the floor in his room and looking aged. He couldn’t talk well; he was obviously broken. For almost five years, he slept on the floor as he couldn’t sleep on the bed without his wife.”
According to Tolu, who is also a pastor, the children told their father to remarry as they felt he needed a companion.
She added, “At a time, he didn’t want to remarry; he was not ready for it. He still wore his wedding ring for almost six years after my mum’s death. It was when he went to America for a checkup that his doctor friends looked for a way to take off the ring. They asked him to remove all his jewelries for checkup and they made sure he didn’t wear the ring back.
“When he told me to go for my master’s degree, I said there was no way I would leave him in Nigeria. I pushed him to get a new wife; it is not good for a man to be alone.”
While admitting that Pastor Taiwo missed his late wife a lot, she stressed that her dad’s present wife, Nomthi, was amazing too, saying God had closed the chapter of her mum and opened a new chapter.
“I am sure he misses my mum and I am sure he loves Aunty Nomthi too. The two episodes of his life are different and cannot be compared with each other.
“My dad and mum were like ‘bread and butter’. I am sure he cherished all the time spent with her. They understood each other and they were really in love. My dad’s love for my mum made him push her to achieve great things. People kept wondering who the pastor of the church was when my mum was alive. Whenever I told them it was my dad, they argued with me. My mum became more popular because she was on the television screen but people didn’t know that it was my dad’s idea. Everything she did, my dad made her do it. If you were opportune to see her on television, she gave credit to my dad.”
