How Larry Gaaga Revived Igbo's Egedege Sound And Brought It Into The Mainstream Of Music In Nigeria

Egedege is a genre of music which emanated from the South-East, Nigeria. The genre is a classic imperial dance that is characterized by bright colours, flute, drums and horns. The dance also involves strenuous movement of the legs.

The music was only common in Igbo land, and people outside the region were not conversant with it. The traditional music was made popular in the region by Theresa Onuorah, a native of Unubi, Nnewi South in Anambra State.

The name "Egedege" is gotten from local slang for richness and bravery. At the height of Theresa Onuorah's career, many people wanted to have a sight of her performing.

But several years ago, the singer who was popularly known as the "goddess of Egedege" went into silence, and not much was heard of her again.

Having sunk into obscurity, the Egedege music seemed to have become a thing of the past too. People who were fans of the music only looked back at it with nostalgia. And that was until Larry Gaaga came up with the hit track "Egedege" a few weeks ago.

The song which featured the legendary Nollywood actor Pete Edochie, Flavour and Phyno immediately became a national hit, and made many non-Igbo people to develop a keen interest in Egedege.

In the epilogue of the song, Pete Edochie was heard talking in Igbo about Egedege and Theresa Onuorah, and referring to her as the one who makes Egedege music.

So while Theresa Onuorah's music was mainly for the Igbo people, which explains why she sang only in Igbo language, Larry Gaaga came and refined it in a way that other non-Igbo people could relate with and appreciate it. With the way the song was accepted by Nigerians, it won't be surprising to see more of Egedege music on the mainstream of the music industry in Nigeria, just as it happened with the Highlife genre.
