The ongoing nationwide #EndSARSprotest in Nigeria has taken a new dimension as thugs have infiltrated the rank and file of protesters and are cashing on this to wreak havoc on the lives of people and properties. This is a clear departure from the original intentions of the original protesters who are peacefully making their grievances about police brutality known to the appropriate authorities.
In the past 72 hours various private and public buildings have been destroyed and looted by the hoodlums. Many people have expressed their concern of this ugly trend and are giving the protest a second thought as a result of the loss of lives and properties.
Big Brother Naija Lockdown housemate in the recently concluded TV reality show, Erica Nlewedin, has taken to her Twitter handle to join other Nigerians in expressing her utmost displeasure at the ironic turn of the #EndSARS protest going on across the nation.
The disqualified housemate condemned in the strongest terms the excessive looting and vandalisation of stores in the high brow area of Lekki, Lagos, by hoodlums who are cashing on the protest. Erica said the fight is targeted against the oppresors, not innocent citizens that are the oppressed.
She wrote: “Now thugs are looting and vandalizing shops in lekki! These are businesses of fellow citizens! The fight is against our oppressors, this makes no sense!”
Her reaction is coming after hoodlums under the guise of being protesters, took advantage of the mass unrest in the country to loot and destroy properties of innocent citizens and also cart away the goods of store owners on the Lagos Island and other parts of the city .
The Nollywood actress and TV reality show star is undauntedly correct in her view of the terror the hoodlums are unleashing on the already oppressed citizens of Nigeria. Looting and destroying public or private properties sends the wrong signal to the authorities and defeats the who essence of the protest.
