Why other states affected by banditry should imitate the recent smart action deployed by Gov. Masari

The heightened security challenges which the notorious activities of bandits have posed in recent times are highly alarming and lamentable. There have been occasions of kidnapping, killing, and even destruction of property in most states that bandits have carried out their activities. These acts of banditry have stunted the economic growth and development within the region affected.

However, though the federal government has shown strict commitment in ending banditry in the states affected, the state governors also have their part to play in ensuring that banditry is a thing of the past.

Hence, a recent smart action deployed by Governor Bello Masari in Katsina State is worthy of emulation by other governors whose states are affected by banditry. It was reported by the Peoples Gazette that the governor Bello of Katsina is set to recruit hunters to aid professional security personnel in the fight against banditry.

The governor disclosed this smart action on Tuesday in Katsina, at a consultative briefing he held with the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on the security situation in the state. The governor specifically stated that Katsina State would recruit 500 hunters and vigilantes 250 each from Katsina and the Daura Emirates to protect communities from bandit attacks. He said the hunters and vigilantes would be stationed permanently in the communities after the military had left.

Consequently, if other states affected by banditry could adopt this method of recruiting hunters, it will go a long way to curb the activities of these wicked bandits. It is good to understand that these hunters will probably be indigenous hunters who have a very good knowledge of the terrain of the environment and as such, they will provide good support for professional security men while tackling these bandits. Though the hunters should be properly given orientation so that they understand the task they are about to undertake. In conclusion, Governor Masari should be commended for this smart action because this will facilitate the end of banditry in his state and also any other state that will adopt the recruitment of hunters to aid security agents.
