The park's got its name from two historic settlements: Gashaka village in Taraba State, and Gumti village in Adamawa State. The National Park was established by a Federal Decree in 1991 by the merger of both the Gashaka Game Reserve with Gumti Game Reserve. The Gashaka-Gumti Park is 450 meters above sea level from the plains of the Northern sector, while it is 2,400 meters above sea level from the Southern park sector, thereby, making it Nigeria's highest mountain.
